Mobile phone and smart watch policy reminder –

DECYP policy is for mobile phones and smart watches to be off and away all day. This can be where the students hands their phone or watch to the teacher who will send it to the office for safe keeping and collected at the end of the day (we have many students who do this) or kept in their bag the whole day, including recess and lunch. For the latter option, families need to understand that if something happens to the item – broken or lost – then it is the student’s responsibility. If you child has a phone or wears a smart watch, please have this discussion with them.
Crazy Hair/Hat Fundraiser
The Y6 Community Connections leaders ran a Crazy Hair / Hat Day to raise funds for mental health research. They raised $292.

Hobart City Council Traffic Survey Report –
Thank you to all the families who participated in the survey. The report has been finalised and sent to us. I have shared with the School Association. Attached is the report for you to read.
External School Review –
Every four years DECYP schools undertake a review where a panel of principals come to our school for three days to interview staff, students and families, review our documents and assess us with the School Improvement Tool, which look at our Improvement agenda, our use of data, how we promote learning, use our resources, build the expertise of our staff, deliver the curriculum, differentiate teaching and learning, use suitable educational practices and connecgt with the wider community.
Our review will be held from Monday 8th September to Wednesday 10th September.
If you would be interested in being interviewed, please contact the school. 62232268 or joanne.waldon@decyp.com.au
Sporting happenings
Soccer in PE for Y5/6s – over the last few weeks the Y5/6 classes have been taught soccer skills by some expert soccer women.
Soccer World Cup – began this week. Students who wish to participate, are placed in mixed teams with Y3-6 students, boys and girls and a mi of abilities. The teams play at recess 3 times a week. After all the teams have played there are semi-finals and finals. This soccer tournament is organised and run by the Y6 sports leaders.

Her Court Initiative – we have had three sessions of the basketball sessions with a good turnup for each, and it is lovely to see the Y6 leaders running the sessions with such ease.

Document Camera –
In term 1, the School Association bought the school a number of document cameras, which have been widely used across the school, often for reading activities and maths. Here is an example where the camera has been used to support students understand and follow instructions when doing a ceramics unit in 3/4BE. Ms Ruby Edwards demonstrated the task, and the students could see it on the TV.
Thank you to all who support the School Association fundraisers, it makes a difference.

Book Week

Our book week parade will be on Wednesday 20th August. Weather permitting, the students will parade around the Northern Yard at 9.10am before heading into the Multi-Purpose Room for sharing. Parents are welcome to watch the outside parade.
Reading – Fluency
Partner fluency routines are where students read a passage repeatedly to a partner who provides specific feedback each time, then they swap roles. This supports students to immediately practice the suggestions made and improve their ready rate, expression and use of punctuation when reading. Students are supported to give feedback by using a fluency rubric which explains what needs to be done to be an accurate and fluent reader.

Surveys –
September is DECYP survey time. Students in Y4-6 will participate in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey and the Kinder to Y3 students will undertake the Wellbeing Check-in survey.
Families also get to have their say in the School Satisfaction Survey. You will be sent a link to this survey in a couple of weeks. We encourage you to take the time to fill in the survey as the data we receive is used to make decisions moving forward.

It is a Department of Education requirement that all medications to be taken by students during the school day are to be passed into the office or teacher in charge of an excursion or camp. The medications require a signed doctor/pharmacist as well as parent permission form (these forms are available in the Forms and Documents panel in the newsletter or at the office). The medication is also to be in the original packaging so that staff know what they are administering. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Medical Action Plans
Every child at Albuera Street Primary with a medical condition needs to supply an updated medical plan to the school each year, especially those with Anaphylaxis and Asthma. Staff from Albuera have been trained in Anaphylaxis using EpiPens and also in Ventolin administration for Asthma.
