Principals Report

Festival of Voices –
In the last week of last term, I had the privilege of experiencing the Festival of Voices children’s choir. Our students, along with students from other public and private schools, spent term 2 learning a variety of songs then had the opportunity of working with an international conductor and singing with the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra. The students were amazing. I was very proud of the effort everyone gave to their signing and appreciate Mr Peter Eddleston for the work and support he put into teaching the choir to the high standard expected to participate in the concert.
Festival of Voices
The first rehearsal was at Stanley Burbury Theatre. Once we arrived, we met the other schools and our conductor, Annie Kwok. The day started with practicing our songs and choreography. We had a short lunch break outside then went back to the theatre. After a few hours, a lot of practice, and going back to school, we were tired. The second rehearsal was at City Hall. This time, only the choirs who were performing on Wednesday were present. Once we arrived, we headed to the stage. We practiced with the T.Y.O. and strings for some songs after the lunch break. The sound together was amazing. That night, we sang. We, the guest choirs, and T.Y.O. performed. Then the final song. Even the parents joined in, it was an unforgettable experience.

NAPLAN Reports
This week the individual NAPLAN reports have been sent home for the students who participated in the national testing. Teachers have begun to look at the data of individual students as well as cohorts and results over time which helps us plan for future teaching.
If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s report, please contact your child’s teacher.
Science Week

If you have a scientific skill or experiment you would like to share, contact your child’s teacher about a time for you to come into the school to share your knowledge or skill. Last year the students learnt about volcanoes, the brain and bushfires.
We also have some classes who will have Young Tassie Scientists run workshops with the students.
Book Week

Our book week parade will be on Wednesday 20th August. Weather permitting, the students will parade around the Northern Yard before heading into the Multi-Purpose Room for sharing.
Her Court Initiative

This term our school has signed up to run ‘Her Court’, a basketball program aimed at supporting girls in Years 3-6 to be actively engaged and participating in basketball one lunchtime a week. Over 50 schools across Tasmania have signed up and Ms Renee Britton will be co-ordinating this opportunity.
Girls are far less likely than boys to be active during school breaks. That’s often down to a few key factors — including self-perceptions that sport isn’t “for them”, a lack of visible encouragement, and sporting spaces that don’t always feel welcoming or inclusive. The result? Girls miss out on the physical, mental and social benefits of play — and over time, those missed moments reinforce limiting beliefs about their place in sport.
Her Court is designed to be student-led and low-lift. There’s no formal session or coaching required — just a supportive space, encouragement to show up and simple tools to help girls enjoy the game on their terms. Her Court is fully funded through the Play Our Way grant to ensure every school has the opportunity to get involved and more girls are supported to get on the court and in the game.
Reading – Fluency

This term, we are adding fluency as a focus for our reading. Fluency is an indicator of comprehension and involves reading aloud so that it sounds like talking with a suitable pace, expression and using punctuation to support the meaning. Fluency expectations will be different in different grades, with younger students being supported through teacher led reading up to independent readers. This term the English Evidence of Learning (EoL) will focus on Fluency.

The cake stall, held at the end of last term raised $1085. Thank you to all who contributed to this event through providing cakes, to organising, setting up and selling. At next meeting we will decide where and what to spend this money on 😊

The medications require a signed doctor/pharmacist as well as parent permission form (these forms are available in the Forms and Documents panel in the newsletter or at the office). The medication is also to be in the original packaging so that staff know what they are administering. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
