The Kinders at Long Beach reading Sea Country – this excursion was about connecting to country in particular – where the land meets the sea – where, as an island state, we tend to spend a lot of time.
NAIDOC Week
This week is our school’s focus on NAIDOC which will culminate with our assembly on Friday. The theme of this year’s NAIDOC Week is: The Next Generation; Strength, Vision and Legacy

Learn to Swim Program
This annual program is for students from Years 3-5. This is part of the curriculum for our students and, as an island, an essential skill for our students to learn and improve on. Students are grouped according to their skill level. These groups begin with teaching basic swimming skills up to refining swimming techniques. The lessons also include water safety skill essential for all students.
Jigsaw Donation

Thank you, Patrick Oxbrough, for donating this amazing jigsaw artwork to our school. The students will enjoy noticing all the delightful scenes and characters in this epic puzzle.
Taroona High School Y7 Visit

Each year the Y6 students have a variety of events to support their transition into high school. The first of these was a visit by Paige and Gemma, Albuera students from last year, and Charles White, principal of Taroona High School visited the school and shared information about being in Year 7 at THS. They also answered many questions posed by our students.
In August, the students who are heading to THS for 2026 will participate in a Taster Day where they visit the school and in December, they will attend an Orientation Day. Students going to other schools attend their schools’ orientations as needed.
Flora Pan on Leave
Mrs Flora Pan will be on leave for Term 3. We have Ms Sherry Chen taking on the role. Learning of culture and language skills shall continue throughout the term.

Farewell Veronica Brunton
Last week the staff farewelled Veronica Brunton who has been our library technician for over 13 years. We have appreciated the way she has run the library, sourcing books she knows students love to read, creating an inviting space for students to enjoy books and the way she has promoted a love of reading, in particular celebrating Book Week.
We wish Veronica all the best in this new phase in life where she will spend time with her crafts and her grandchildren.
Ms Mandy Newton will continue in her library role this year as well as her literacy support and Launching into Learning roles.
School Association Cake Stall –
This Friday the School Association will be running a cake stall at the end of the day. Our last cake stall paid for the Lisa Ford parent session about friendship. This one will support the purchasing of equipment in our school.
Parent Tip -

We wish you all an enjoyable and safe holiday.
See you back here on Monday 21st July.

Protecting our Oceans
Dear Albuera Street families,
This is a quick thank you, overview and ‘where to from here’ regarding the ‘ocean action’ sessions that I ran across the school this term.
Thank you
Firstly, thanks to Jo for enabling this idea; many thanks to all the teachers for all your support and enthusiasm; and a HUGE thank you to all the incredible children for all their creativity and amazing effort. From the kindies to year 6’s, every single student was so engaged and contributed to the incredible outputs of this project.
Project overview
Each class learnt about the importance of our oceans in supporting all life on Earth. A particular fact that all classes enjoyed learning is that our Oceans give us more oxygen than all the trees on our planet! We discussed ways we can help – a significant one being sharing our voices with decision makers. Each class created artworks of different ocean wildlife and wrote/recorded messages calling on world leaders to protect our oceans. The main messages included ‘ban deep-sea trawling’, ‘stop unsustainable fishing practices’, and very importantly to ‘ratify the High Seas Treaty’.
Outputs
The artworks and voices have been collated into a film, which we will put up on the school website shortly. The outputs have received a lot of interest and have been shared widely, including by The Jane Goodall Institute, DCCEEW (Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water), the Sea Change Project, Ocean Youth, The Australian Marine Conservation Society, the Great Southern Reef Foundation, Wildlife Reach Productions, amongst others.
Next steps
Over the next few months, I will continue to share the children’s art and messages. The aim to inspire greater youth ocean action and ultimately enable the children’s work to contribute to the building up of public pressure on the Australian government to ratify the High Seas Treaty and commit to genuine protection of our Oceans. So far 50 countries have ratified the treaty, so we need 10 more for it to become international law. The High Seas make up 64% of our global ocean and are currently not protected at all. David Attenborough identifies the High Seas as the most important place on Earth to protect. Having the High Seas Treaty become law would be an enormous win for our Ocean and the Planet. If Australia ratifies the treaty my hope is that Albeura students will feel very much part of this great achievement and be inspired and empowered to act on other environmental challenges, rather than feel overwhelmed by them.
Please note that in all photos and films that have been shared I have ensured that all faces have been covered up by the artworks and signs. There may be some media covering this project over the next couple of months and if we feel photos/recordings with faces may maximise impact we will contact parents directly for consent.
If anyone would like to learn more about this project or has any questions please feel free to contact me direct on 0402198209 or at aletalederwasch@gmail.com
Many thanks,
Aleta

Prep
What a fabulous group of little learners we have in prep puggles. We had an amazing, settled start to the year and I was excited to see how ready our puggles were to start their first year of full-time school.
We have been busy making friends, learning our class routines and most of all having fun.
We are looking forward to the new adventures we will have with our grade 3/4 buddies which we met last week and showing off our dance moves at the disco after a week of practice with Footsteps.

Grade 5/6DJ
For NAIDOC Week, 5/6DJ explored the picture book The Rabbits by John Marsden and Shaun Tan.
We began by examining the illustrations, focusing on the visual differences before and after the arrival of the rabbits. This led to a discussion about the impact of colonisation, as represented through the changing landscape in the book.
Next, we thought about the story from the perspective of the land itself. Using the literary device of personification, students wrote creatively to express how the land might have felt before and after the rabbits arrived capturing its voice, emotions, and experiences through imaginative writing. We hope you enjoy reading these.

The medications require a signed doctor/pharmacist as well as parent permission form (these forms are available in the Forms and Documents panel in the newsletter or at the office). The medication is also to be in the original packaging so that staff know what they are administering. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Medical Action Plans
Every child at Albuera Street Primary with a medical condition needs to supply an updated medical plan to the school each year, especially those with Anaphylaxis and Asthma. Staff from Albuera have been trained in Anaphylaxis using EpiPens and also in Ventolin administration for Asthma.
