Principals Report

Keeping our students safe:
As we are well into the school year, it’s a good time for families to talk to their children about safety when making their way to and from school.
Parents are encouraged to discuss:
- Children walking with friends if they can.
- Being aware of their surroundings.
- Never going anywhere with a stranger.
- Telling someone about suspicious behaviour – a parent, their school, or police.
If anyone witnesses suspicious behaviour, they can report it to police on 131 444 or Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.
Footsteps Dance –

Once again, the students have been involved in Footsteps. This program has each grade learning dances through-out the week and then the opportunity to perform those dances at the disco held on Thursday evening. This program highlights exercise, co-ordination, following instructions, memory, listening to music and moving in time to the beat as well as the good feeling of achieving mastery of the dances learnt.
Disco -
Lots of fun was had at the disco on Thursday evening. The students had the opportunity to showcase the dances that they had learnt over the week as well as free dancing. There were lots of sparkles worn in the K-2 disco and the 3-6s celebrated the great skills of many of the students. It has been lovely hearing from both students and parents how much they enjoyed the disco and appreciated the effort of the staff in providing this opportunity for the students. It is our pleasure to see our students in a different light having other opportunities to shine and enjoy their learning.

NAPLAN –
Students in Y3 and Y5 participated in their first NAPLAN test today – the writing test. This test is a paper and pencil one for Y3 students and online for Y5. This is one of the reasons all students from year 2 onward have access to the online typing program, Typing Tournament, as keyboard skills support students to put their thoughts on paper without having to spend time finding the keys.
Students will undertake the Reading test this week and the Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy tests next week.
While these tests are important and give the school valuable information about individuals, cohorts and the school it must be remembered that it is a point in time assessment and teachers use many other assessments as well as observations in order to know where the students are at and where to take them next in their learning.

Student Leadership –
Last newsletter we celebrated to students who became the Sports House and vice Captains. Since then, all students have applied for and been allocated their leadership roles. These roles are:
Community Connections – a group that works with Mrs Waldon to plan for and run fundraisers, not for our school, but for the wider community including purposes the students consider important. In previous years we have run fundraisers for Ukraine refugees, Hobart City Mission, World Wildlife fund, Pride, the Cancer Council and many more.
IT Gurus – this group use their IT skills to support other students, trouble shoot issues and help out staff as well as run the IT part of our assemblies. Mr Steve Jeffrey coordinates this group.
Media Team – these students are responsible for taking photos and videos of events and sharing them for newsletters and other activities. Mr Jeffrey coordinates this group.
Green Team – this group work closely with Ms Caroline Corrigan and will often be found in the garden as well as overseeing our FOGO collection of food scraps and can run campaigns for awareness on sustainability and being environmentally responsible.
Peer Mediators – this group are responsible for supporting our younger students through playground issues and can run games and activities for the students. Mrs Jess Dilger coordinates this group.
Our student leaders are role models for the rest of the school, and we have high expectations of their behaviour and willingness to do that bit extra for the school. We are very proud of the way our school’s student leaders step up.

Harmony Week –
Next week is Harmony Week and we invite families to make a time to visit their child’s class to talk about your culture so we can celebrate the wonderful diversity of our school.

Harmony Day Breakfast -
This wonderful event is Wednesday 19th March, next week, from 8-9am.
Please come and bring a plate of food to share connected to your culture. (Please no nuts or food that needs heating up. Include a list of ingredients so those with allergies can know what is safe to eat.)
Parents are encouraged to wander around the school visiting the classrooms and partake in the delicious offerings.
Students are encouraged to wear clothes associated to their culture, the colours of their flag or orange – the colour of Harmony Day.
Please remember that students have a Daily PE session that day, so suitable shoes need to be worn.

Parent Tip – Honest Communication

While all this learning, celebrating and other activities are happening at our school there are many of our families now in Ramadan.
We wish you Ramadan Mubarak.

Prep M
What a fabulous group of little learners we have in prep puggles. We had an amazing, settled start to the year and I was excited to see how ready our puggles were to start their first year of full-time school.
We have been busy making friends, learning our class routines and most of all having fun.
We are looking forward to the new adventures we will have with our grade 3/4 buddies which we met last week and showing off our dance moves at the disco after a week of practice with Footsteps.

Grade 3/4W
The Springs to Waterworks Bushwalk and BBQ
On Wednesday 26 February, the 3 Grade 3/4 classes (3/4W, 3/4B and 3/4SW) went on a bushwalk from The Springs via Fern Tree and McDermott’s Saddle, to the Waterworks Reserve. We followed a route downhill along the Pipeline track for approximately 7 kilometres. Thanks to a number of parent volunteers, we ended with a BBQ for lunch at the Waterworks Reserve.
It was a fine, warm day and the students coped very well with the walk. Some of them may have even enjoyed it! The students were very well-behaved and it was a great way for us all to get to know each other and share a common goal.

Staff from Albuera have been trained in Anaphylaxis using EpiPens and also in Ventolin administration for Asthma.
