Hats
Our Sun Safe Policy requires students to wear hats from September until the end of the year. Please have a hunt for your child’s school hat in readiness for next week.
Swimming and Water Safety Program (SWSP)
This annual program for students from Years 3-5 will be starting on Monday 2nd September for two weeks at the Collegiate Pool.
This three-year program consists of ten consecutive lessons each year. It supports our students to become competent swimmers and be water safe.
The program has a strong emphasis on:
- water safety, including boat safety
- using personal floatation devices
- survival swimming
- reach to rescue
- entering aquatic environments safely
- efficient stroke development
- building swimming stamina.
These skills build the foundation for safe participation in aquatic activities.
The dates for our school program are: Monday 2 September to Friday 13 September
Your child will need to bring the following items every day of their program:
- Bathers
- A towel and plastic bag to put wet clothes in
- Any medication (e.g., asthma medication) that may be needed at the poolside.
(please contact the school if you have any difficulties in providing this equipment or wish to ask questions about what is appropriate)
Please note:
Goggles: Students may use goggles in the pool however they are not encouraged. An aim of the program is that students become competent in their skills without the use of goggles. Some parts of the program, in particular the survival in deep water will be assessed without goggles.
Swimming Caps: Caps are provided by the school, for health and safety reasons, it is Department of Education policy that all students are required to wear swimming caps.
Jewellery: For safety reasons, ear studs and dangly earrings are not to be worn in the pool. Sleepers are allowed.
Jump Rope Demonstration
This term, students will be engaging in learning to skip and improve their skills. Skipping is a great activity to support heart health as well as improving dexterity. We were fortunate to have the Waimea Wonders Jump Rope for Heart Demonstration Team perform at our school to inspire them to try to learn some tricks and get skipping. Near the end of term, we will have a whole school Jump-Off, where we challenge students to skip in various ways for a block of the school day. This is a fund-raiser for The Heart Foundation. More information will be forthcoming about this event. It is time to encourage your children to get skipping 😊.
Surveys
There are a few surveys that you will be receiving information about. One is the Student Wellbeing and Engagement survey which students from Y4-6 participate in. The younger students also will participate in a short survey about their wellbeing and engagement at school.
Families are asked to undertake a Families Satisfaction survey. This is a very valuable survey which gives us data to support decision making at our school. We appreciate that at many times we can become a little survey weary, but please make time for this survey as the more people who do it the more relevant the data is.
NEDs Mindfulness Performance
Our students participated in a performance all about developing a growth mindset. Understanding persistence and the power of ‘YET’ – we may not be able to do something yet, but with practice and some hard work we can get there. How encouraging yourself and others can build them up and support them to persist and give things a go, and how being curious, asking questions and being ok about making mistakes or not knowing is important to progress learning. The students were inspired by the magic and yo-yo tricks that were incorporated into the show.
Book Week
Last week we had our Book Week Parade celebrating wonderful characters from literature. Students came dressed up in creative costumes from many different stories. We appreciate the effort families go to create these costumes. Children have wonderful memories of their Book Week parades.
Thank you to the families who came along to read to the students. It is important for children to see adults reading at school and in the home as it fosters a love of reading.
Instructional Rounds
Our student Instructional Rounds participants
Albuera Street PS has been involved with a group of schools known as the Core Collective for around 6 years now. The schools involved are Waimea Heights PS, Sandy Bay Infant, Taroona High, Taroona PS, Mt Nelson PS, South Hobart PS and Lansdowne PS. Together we have been running a process called Instructional Rounds where groups of educators from all these schools get together to look at a focus of a school, read professional readings, define the focus, make observations in classrooms of the teacher, the learning and the students, collate the data and offer recommendations to the school. The last time our school was involved in hosting a rounds session was in 2022. Two weeks ago, we hosted our second round. We had the same focus – How are our students participants in their own learning?
We invited teachers and principals from schools outside our collective and welcomed staff from Hobart City High School and Blackmans Bay PS. Sophia Staite, a School Association member and students from years 5 & 6 also attended. I was extremely proud of our student representatives who worked alongside teachers and principals throughout the one-and-a-half-day process.
Some of the recommendations were:
- To create a whole school understanding and shared language around Student Agency.
- Continue to teach and embed the Learner Assets in the school.
- Continue to support students to set goals, plan the steps to achieve them and measure achievement.
- Explore ways students can show their learning.
- Explore how the classroom environment may affect students.

SMART Reading Goals and Growth
We, in 45W, have been exploring our SMART reading goals. We began these in Term 2 and, having seen the success or otherwise of them, we have changed or modified our new goals for Term 3.
You will find all our reading goals for this term in the photos, and you will discover where we think we are, or how we are travelling, in our words below.
45W and Reading Goals in Term 3, 2024
I have been reading a lot of my book during my holiday and have almost completed the first book, The Dragonet Prophecy – Felicity
I’m going OK since it’s been 3 weeks since I made my SMART goal and it was to read up to book 9 of Keeper of The Lost Cities in 6 weeks, so I have 2 books to read in 3 weeks. I hope I do this one because the last goal I made I didn’t complete – Rose
I am almost finished the tenth Friday Barnes book, so I only have two more books to go and ten chapters of my current book, so I am almost finished my SMART goal – Elizabeth
My second SMART goal is going well, though I have stopped reading WoodWitch because I didn’t like what Cassie, the main character, was doing. So, now I’m reading HedgeWitch [The first book] which might become my next goal – Mia
I’m going very well with reading. Also, I’m doing better than last time, and I’m almost finished with the goal. I read every morning and every night before bed. I think I can finish the goal by next week – Samir
I’m a quarter way through my SMART goal of reading 200 and 300 Minutes of Mystery, and I’ve been enjoying reading at home – Alex
My SMART goal was to read all of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by week 5, but I have not finished. I only have three chapters to go – Matthew
I am going very well with my reading goal. Sometimes, at home, I read way more than one hour. I am enjoying reading more at home – Liam
I am going very well with my new reading goal. I read my novel three times a week for one hour, and sometimes more! I enjoy reading at home – Willow
I am almost finished the first book of the Mystery series. I am reding for 30 minutes a day – Casper
I am not really doing my goal because I just want to read more exciting books, and I had been reading those books over and over last year which made it boring. I am thinking of trying a new goal of reading a variety of books only to 10:00pm, because I am to addicted – Jikei
I have almost completed my reading goal, which was to read one series in two weeks. I am counting the first five books of Wings of Fire as a series and I need to read one more book – Miriam
My second SMART goal has been complete, but I did it in 3 weeks when I was going to do it in a month – Hilton
I am going well with my goal being to finish the Diary Of A Wimpy Kid series. I’m up to the 3rd book. There are 15 more books to go. I am sure I’m going to make it – Tawana
I did well on my last SMART goal because it was too easy so, instead of reading one of the A Girl Called Justice book by the end of term 3, I’m going to read two of them by the end of term 3 – Lucy
I think I’m going well with my SMART reading goal. My goal is to read all the Heroes of Olympus books by the end of this term. I’m up to book two, Heroes of Olympus, The son of Neptune. The first book was, Heroes of Olympus, The lost hero. The series is exciting and daring. So, I think I’m going well – Rishi
I am doing well with my SMART which is to finish Squidge Dibley by the middle of term 4. Although I didn’t finish my first SMART reading goal, I am sure I am going to finish this one – Abel
I’m doing badly on my reading goal because I keep forgetting to read, and no one reminds me to read, and I can’t find my 10 Minutes of Danger book – Jamphel
I am almost finished my SMART goal, for I only have one book left which is The Fork, The Witch, and The Worm. I am really enjoying the World of Eragon – Tristan
I am going well on my SMART goal to be reading the Moon Dog series which has 8 books – Christian
My current goal, which is to read all of the Wings of Fire in order, is going well. I am currently at The Brightest Night which is Book 5 - Gracie

We have a number of students in our school who are allergic to nuts and nut products. Exposure to nuts can trigger an allergic reaction and be life-threatening for these students, so please avoid sending nuts or nut based products to school. We aim to keep our school as nut-free as possible to keep our students safe.

Student Medications
It is a Department of Education requirement that all medications to be taken by students during the school day are to be passed into the office or teacher in charge of an excursion or camp. The medications require a signed doctor/pharmacist as well as parent permission form (these forms are available in the Forms and Documents panel in the newsletter or at the office). The medication is also to be in the original packaging so that staff know what they are administering. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Medical Action Plans
Every child at Albuera Street Primary with a medical condition needs to supply an updated medical plan to the school each year, especially those with Anaphylaxis and Asthma. Staff from Albuera have been trained in Anaphylaxis using EpiPens and also in Ventolin administration for Asthma. If you are new to the school and your child has a medical condition please come into the office and collect an appropriate action plan form, or if you just have questions please don’t hesitate to phone the school.

The Department requirement is that you must present your RWVP card EVERY time you sign in.
Information for those who need to apply for WWVP card
