Principals Report
Welcome to Term 2
Autumn is showing its beautiful side in the foliage we are seeing in our grounds and the crisp morning we have been having. We no longer need to wear hats, but students may wish to wear beanies as the weather gets colder. Term 2 will have fewer interruptions that Term 1 and teachers are looking forward to a solid term for learning.
Later this term you will receive Evidences of Learning (EoLs), examples of your child’s learning and following this, we will have face-to-face parent teacher meetings where you will receive your child’s midyear report.
Reminder – families need to be out of the northern playground by 3:15pm because Lady Gowrie hires the area for After-School Care. If you want to continue with your conversations and play, you are welcome to head to the southern yard. Children must be supervised by an adult as our duty-of-care finishes at 3:15.
Our diverse school
Our wonderful school has around 250 students and is filled with diversity, which is one of the things that many people tell me that they love about this school. We have students from over 20 different countries and a mix of nationalities. We have students with all sorts of skills, expertise, and interests. We have children with differing needs and requiring differing supports for learning both academically and socially. We are all here to learn and on individual journeys in doing so. Students will make mistakes, it is part of learning, both academically and socially and it is our job as the adults, staff and families, to support students through this learning journey. We are all different yet we are all the same – needing love, support and understanding while we navigate this thing called school and life.
Lian Tanner – Book Launch
On the first Saturday of the holidays, we had 6 of our students perform a short play as part of the book launch for Lian Tanner’s new book Fledgewitch. They did a wonderful job and represented our school very well. Here are a few photos of the event.
Lisa Ford
Lisa Ford is a psychologist who runs workshops for parents and students (Ys 4-6) around social skills. Last year she ran a session about friendships with the students and this year we had her running a parent workshop which happen yesterday and the students in years 4 & 5 will have had their sessions on the need for ‘grit’ as an important factor in success in school and life. These sessions have been funded by a grant from the Federal Government supporting student wellbeing.
Cross Country
Our whole school (Kinder to Y6) will participate in our Cross Country next Wednesday 15th May. If you are available to help and have a WwVP card as well as undertaking the Mandatory Reporting online video, we would love to hear from you.
Albuera Ukulele group (AUKS)
Last term Mr Williams had all the students new to the ukulele learning the basics. This term we combine the new students with returning students to have this wonderful group. Some of our older students will be supporting the younger ones with their learning. We look forward to hearing their first performance later in the year.
School Association Meeting – Tuesday 14th May – 6pm
If you are interested in joining us for the online meeting, please email me – joanne.waldon@decyp.tas.gov.au
We will be discussing the possibility of having a fair in late October. Without support this will not be able to happen. Last fair raised over $20 000 which has been used to support the purchasing of the new projector and playground upgrades that will be occurring this term.
We would love your involvement and it only take about 90 minutes of your time.

Grade 2/3B
During term 1 we were looking into local places that are significant to our local community. We looked at why they were significant, what we can learn about the past and other interesting facts. Most chose the Tasman Bridge and together we researched the history and reasons for why it operates the way it does today.
Grade 4/5W
Don’t you just love a Paint-By-Number?
Well, that’s just what we did!
Here are our artistic creations. We utilised a range of crayons from Crayola called ‘Colours of the World’. It has 24 shades of skin colours from which to choose that we may find to be close to the shades of our skin. We were interested to discuss with each other which colours we chose and see who also chose the same. There was a lot of overlap in our multicultural classroom!
Albuera Unicorns in the Tasmania Cup
Sorell 2024
In late 2023 a group of year 4/5 students stumbled across a tournament looking for signups. This group of people thought it would be fun, so they registered.
Except for James who recently moved to Friends, this was a group of grades 5s and 6s from ASPS. Over half of this group (6 to be exact) had never played soccer before. We entered the Division 2 Under 12s. We were in a group with Olympia Warriors FC, Nelson FC, Devonport Junior Soccer Girls, and Glenorchy Knights FC.
This is the list of players:
Oliver B, Minh Nhat N, Teddy D, Rasesh Nepal, Santi B, William S, Jingyu Z, Paul R, Edmund K, Louie W and James M. Our coach was David (Oliver’s stepdad)
Day 1: Friday 26th April
On Day 1, we had a late game in pitch black except for floodlights. The game kicked off and we quickly realised how good this team was. With quick passes and amazing skills, they broke our defence down easily. With Oliver in goals shouting commands and Jingyu shouting for the ball it was chaos. Olympia was on their first attack and Oliver came charging out. He punched the ball, but the ball rebounded off his hand. It was heading into the goal, but by some miracle, William was there to head it away. Defenders Santi, Louie, and goalkeeper Oliver were stopping many goals in that first half. Louie diving into every tackle, Santi preventing fancy Olympia attackers from progressing down the field, and Oliver making brilliant saves left, right and centre. After a long goal kick from Oliver, some brilliant play in the midfield and a great pass from Paul, Jingyu ended up with the ball making an amazing run down the field and finishing the ball in the bottom corner of the Olympia goal just before half time.
After oranges and grapes at the half time break, we were ready to go at them again. We held on to the 1-0 lead for as long as we could; the closest they came was when their star striker hit the crossbar. As Oliver screamed AWAY, Edmund decided to kick it back at our goal to hit the crossbar A SECOND TIME! But in the last few minutes, Olympia had a shot at goal and unluckily took a deflection off Santi’s calf into the top corner. But as the ref blew for fulltime, all the Albuera players celebrated as they tied 1-1 with one of the best clubs in Tasmania.
Day 2: Saturday 27th April
3:00pm: On Day 2, we had a game against Nelson FC. The game started off strong as we got an early goal from Jingyu. Paul was making great runs down the wing and the defence was dealing with the Nelson attacks. Nelson had one weakness: pace. All Jingyu, Paul and Louie had to do is make power runs down sidelines and the Nelson players would be left scrambling back.
At halftime, we grew ever more confident, believing that we would win the match, and maybe even the whole tournament. Jingyu and the midfielders rushed forward, knocking forward two more goals to finish off 3-0, this meant we were top of the group.
Day 3: Sunday 28th
9:00am: We entered the final day with high morale since we were top of the group. The first game would be against Glenorchy Knights FC. Through very trying circumstances, by halftime it was 1-1 and we were demoralised. The game ended 1-1 and Albuera were not in the best of moods.
11:00am: Our final game was to be played against Devonport Junior soccer girls. Before the game kicked off hopes of winning weren’t high, but we would still try our best. The game ended 3-0 to Devonport, the team that went on to win the whole thing. Even though we ended up losing, all that matters is that we tried our best. The first two games were a time to remember, not so much the other two but we learned and grew through our mistakes.

Student Medications
It is a Department of Education requirement that all medications to be taken by students during the school day are to be passed into the office or teacher in charge of an excursion or camp. The medications require a signed doctor/pharmacist as well as parent permission form (these forms are available in the Forms and Documents panel in the newsletter or at the office). The medication is also to be in the original packaging so that staff know what they are administering. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Medical Action Plans
Every child at Albuera Street Primary with a medical condition needs to supply an updated medical plan to the school each year, especially those with Anaphylaxis and Asthma. Staff from Albuera have been trained in Anaphylaxis using EpiPens and also in Ventolin administration for Asthma. If you are new to the school and your child has a medical condition please come into the office and collect an appropriate action plan form, or if you just have questions please don’t hesitate to phone the school.
