Principals Report

So often society tends to focus on the deficits or difficulties of disabilities, but there are many aspects we can celebrate. This captured my eye for all of us, students, teachers or families with ADHD, either diagnosed or not, you have many strengths. Let’s celebrate.
Kinder and Classes for 2024 –
We are happy to inform the community that we will be having two Kinder classes in 2024.
Mrs Kerrin McKeown will be on leave for all of 2024. We will miss her but wish her well on her yearlong adventure in Canberra with her family. Mr Eldon Jenkin and Mrs Jayne Foster will be the Kinder teachers for next year.
We will have two new teachers joining us to take on the classes Eldon and Jayne will be moving from.
Classes for next year are still being finalised. Students and families will find out their classes, classmates and teachers for 2024 on Tuesday 19th December, after lunch. Teachers have spent a great deal of time looking at the make-up of our classes and have considered student and parent requests, student combinations, mix of academic and social skills.
Wellbeing Survey –
Every year the students from Years 4-6 participate in the Student Wellbeing and Engagement Survey. The results can be compared to Tasmania and across the years. Below is some of the data from our school.

Volunteers Thank you –

This morning we held our thank you breakfast for our school volunteers. Our school appreciates all the volunteers who help our school and students. We have people who give of their time to attend School Association meetings, help with fundraisers, the canteen, the garden, excursions, student reading as well as helping your own children with their learning. Every little bit helps our school and the students and staff to be able to do the learning and teaching that is school.
Reporting –
On Friday 15th December, students will bring home their reports. This includes the ratings for the subjects English, Maths, Science and HASS, Effort and Behaviour ratings for specialist subjects, Evidences of Learning (EoL) for English, Maths and many of the specialist subjects. Your child’s self-reflection will also be in the envelope.
EoLs are a point in time sample of student skills and understanding, the rating may or may not correlate with the overall end of year rating. The EOY rating is an on-balance judgement looking at all the aspects of the subject and taking into account all the learning that has occurred.
Some of the EoLs will be shared through Seesaw.
Gardening Club –

Over the past few weeks, we have welcomed some adult volunteers to our Monday Garden Club. Spring is a busy time in the garden as we weed, harvest and watch all the plants growing. Thank you to our student and adult helpers and Mrs Caroline Corrigan for all you do.
Carols –

The students, Mr Eddelstone, the Auks and staff have been working hard to get our songs ready to share at our Carols Evening on Thursday 14th December.
The School Association will be putting on a BBQ the funds from which will help pay for the upgrading of the playground with painted activities for the students to enjoy. Students have already had a chance to choose the type of paintings they would like. We hope to get this underway over the holidays.
Volunteers are needed to help with the BBQ. You don’t have to be there for the whole time, with lots of volunteers the stints will be shorter.
The K-2 sessions starts at 5 and the 3-6 session at 5:30.
Parent Tip – Marvellous Mistakes
I’ll never forget the day my son brought home a spelling test with some empty spaces.
"Hey, buddy," I asked, "if you're not sure about an answer next time, what might you try?"
He gave a small shrug.
"How about just taking a wild guess?" I gently offered.
His eyes widened, "But what if I get it wrong?"
For some kiddos, worrying about making mistakes can feel as real as being scared of those imaginary monsters under the bed.
And here’s the problem.
This fear can sometimes hold our children back from diving into new adventures or taking on challenges.
So, the big question - how do we encourage our kids to give things a go, even if it might lead to a mistake or two?
Here’s a fun approach:
Introduce "marvellous mistakes" into your family's language. Celebrate them, laugh about them, and show that they're just stepping stones on the path to learning and growing.
Every new mistake is proof that we had the courage to step out and try.
Here’s how we use “marvellous mistakes” in our family:
When my son gets a new spelling list, I excitedly say, “Wow, these are all new words! This is a challenge for sure. So, I’m expecting some marvellous mistakes from you!”
And if he happens to spell something incorrectly during our practice, I cheer, “High five! That's learning in action!”
We then have a little chat on how to ace it the next time around.

Solar Boat Challenge

As part of the science curriculum of grade 4/5W we learnt about solar energy. To help students understand the concept, our teacher, Mr Williams had found this challenge do with making a solar powered boat. So, when Mr Williams told us about this challenge, everyone was very ecstatic. The challenge was on!
Before we designed our boats, we talked about the different types of boats such as catamarans, trimarans and more. After we found the boat type we wanted to build, we started to draw and design our boat ideas.
Most people made their boat with polystyrene and corfluet. To cut the polystyrene we use a hot wire cutter but we weren’t allowed to use it so that is where Toby came handy.
On race day the weather was not very pleasant. It was raining but that didn’t stop us from racing our boat! So, at the start we had the round robins, which means if we lost, we weren’t out of the competition. After we had the round robins, we had the eliminations So if you lost you can go home. Our team came fourth overall, and we came first out of all Tasmanian schools.
Thanks to Patrick, Tanay, Abel and Shrish

Nut Allergy – Reminder

We aim to keep our school as nut-free as possible to keep our students safe.

New online information hub for families
Some exciting news! The Department for Education, Children and Young People has recently launched a new online information hub for families with school-aged children in Tasmania. Our new website has information to help you navigate your child's education, from birth all the way up to 18 years of age.
Visit our new webpage at Welcome to your child's Tasmanian education - The Department for Education, Children and Young People Tasmania (decyp.tas.gov.au)
Some of the things you’ll find include

Student Voice
Grade 56DJ
As part of their poetry unit, 5/6DJ have composed poems based on a certain colour. We have explored how the colour interacts with our senses and emotions.
The students are producing some thoughtful and well-constructed poems using rich vocabulary, as they continue to learn how to express themselves in a new medium.
Enjoy!

Medical Action Plans
Every child at Albuera Street Primary with a medical condition needs to supply an updated medical plan to the school each year, especially those with Anaphylaxis and Asthma. Staff from Albuera have been trained in Anaphylaxis using EpiPens and also in Ventolin administration for Asthma. If you are new to the school and your child has a medical condition please come into the office and collect an appropriate action plan form, or if you just have questions please don’t hesitate to phone the school.

Vulnerable People Card Reminder

Sign In Requirements and Checks
New requirements for record keeping have been in effect from August 2018 which specifies that all sites are required to keep visitor sign in registers. All volunteers, external providers, contractors and visitors (where appropriate) must sign in using the visitor register.
A DoE site must request the RWVP card and perform a status check via the DoJ website each time someone presents at or attends a site in their respective capacity. The status check will return current information and indicate any conditions applying to a registration.
If a search fails to return information, this indicates a change in registration has occurred. DoE staff at the worksite must sign off on the visitor register to confirm that RWVP verification has occurred.
The Department requirement is that you must present your RWVP card EVERY time you sign in.
Information for those who need to apply for WWVP card
To volunteer at this school, you will be required to hold a “Registration to Work with Vulnerable People”. It is extremely important that parent helpers and volunteers are registered and Albuera Street Primary School is recorded in your application.
How to apply for a WWVP Card
Complete the online application form. This is available from the website at:
Chose Department of Education from the organisation drop-down box and also select Albuera Street Primary School from the location drop-down box. Please remember each time to volunteer at the school you need to bring your card each time.
