Principals Report

Anglesea Barracks – 10th November.
Thank you –
It is so lovely to be back at school and I’m finding the stairs much easier to navigate. I would like to thank the whole school team for they way everything ran smoothly while I was away. It is reassuring to leave the school in the hands of Mr Steve Jeffrey’s competent leadership along with Mrs Kerrin McKeown. Mr Eldon Jenkin stepped up to the role of AST which he performed admirably.
Evidences of Learning -
Thank you to the people who participated in the survey about EoLs. All who did, shared that they found them useful. Some comments were:
‘It's great to see real schoolwork completed by your child!’
‘I really liked being able to see their classwork, it was a great conversation starter. It was great to hear them explain it to us with confidence, swapping the usual roles in a way’.
‘A great way of communicating with parents & allows insight into progress earlier rather than just waiting until end of year report’.
You can still access the survey through this link:
Remembrance Day –

On Friday 10th November, our school ran a commemoration service for Remembrance Day at Anglesea Barracks. It was a moving and relevant place to do so, and our students exhibited the respect needed for such an occasion. It is wonderful that we can have this connection with the Barracks. Thank you to Lieutenant Colonel Neil Grierson for coordinating with us and presenting the address. We hope to be able to do this next year, but actually on the 11th of the 11th.

Thank you to all the families who sent flowers to be made into bouquets for the students to lay at the memorial. I’m sure you would agree with me that the staff and children who put them together did a great job.

School Association –
We will be having our last meeting of the year on Tuesday 28th November. We will e discussing the Carols BBQ and making plans if we want to run a fair in 2024. This meeting is online from 6pm. If you would like to join us, please let me know (include your email address) and I will include you in the invite.

Community Connections Term 4 Fundraiser –
Hello, we are the Community Connections Team and we have had our last fundraiser for this year. It was on Thursday 9th of November; it was a crazy hat day to raise awareness for Australian Mental Health with the Rotary Club.
Our goal was $300, and we just passed it by $3.
Thank you everyone and have a good day.
Nut Allergy – Reminder
We have a number of students in our school who are allergic to nuts and nut products. Exposure to nuts can trigger an allergic reaction and be life-threatening for these students, so please avoid sending nuts or nut based products to school. We aim to keep our school as nut-free as possible to keep our students safe.
New online information hub for families
Some exciting news! The Department for Education, Children and Young People has recently launched a new online information hub for families with school-aged children in Tasmania. Our new website has information to help you navigate your child's education, from birth all the way up to 18 years of age.
Visit our new webpage at Welcome to your child's Tasmanian education - The Department for Education, Children and Young People Tasmania (decyp.tas.gov.au) (https://www.decyp.tas.gov.au/information-for-families-and-students)
Some of the things you’ll find include
- tips on how to support your child’s learning at home
- information to help you keep your child safe and well
- a guide to explore courses for the career they want
- school holiday and term dates.
We hope this website will be a valuable tool for you as you help your child navigate their education journey. We would love to know what you think of our new information hub for families. You can tell us by completing a quick survey on the webpage.

Grade 3/4W
Secret Huts Bushwalk (3/4 Watkins) – Thursday 16 November 2023
On Thursday, last week, 3/4 W went on a Bushwalking Excursion near the top of Mount Wellington. There was myself (Darren Watkins), Kate Remington and 19 students, as well as 6 parents, whose support I very much appreciated.
The day turned out to be a very cold one and by lunch time it was snowing on and off. Fortunately, we were very well prepared with suitable clothing and adequate provisions. The group enjoyed the light scrub bashing and rough scrambling over the rocks. We visited a couple of huts, explored overhangs and enjoyed the views. Most people seemed to enjoy the day, despite the cold and damp conditions towards the end.

Uniform Times
This year as we are setting times available for the purchase of uniforms.
Tuesdays: 2.30pm to 3.00pm
Thursdays: 8.30 am to 9.15am
Orders can be made and paid for over the phone and be ready to pick up at an arranged time if the above times do not suit you.

- Credit Card over the phone (6223 2268)

Student Medications
It is a Department of Education requirement that all medications to be taken by students during the school day are to be passed into the office or teacher in charge of an excursion or camp. The medications require a signed doctor/pharmacist as well as parent permission form (these forms are available in the Forms and Documents panel in the newsletter or at the office). The medication is also to be in the original packaging so that staff know what they are administering. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
Medical Action Plans
Every child at Albuera Street Primary with a medical condition needs to supply an updated medical plan to the school each year, especially those with Anaphylaxis and Asthma. Staff from Albuera have been trained in Anaphylaxis using EpiPens and also in Ventolin administration for Asthma. If you are new to the school and your child has a medical condition please come into the office and collect an appropriate action plan form, or if you just have questions please don’t hesitate to phone the school.

Vulnerable People Card Reminder

Sign In Requirements and Checks
New requirements for record keeping have been in effect from August 2018 which specifies that all sites are required to keep visitor sign in registers. All volunteers, external providers, contractors and visitors (where appropriate) must sign in using the visitor register.
A DoE site must request the RWVP card and perform a status check via the DoJ website each time someone presents at or attends a site in their respective capacity. The status check will return current information and indicate any conditions applying to a registration.
If a search fails to return information, this indicates a change in registration has occurred. DoE staff at the worksite must sign off on the visitor register to confirm that RWVP verification has occurred.
The Department requirement is that you must present your RWVP card EVERY time you sign in.
Information for those who need to apply for WWVP card
To volunteer at this school, you will be required to hold a “Registration to Work with Vulnerable People”. It is extremely important that parent helpers and volunteers are registered and Albuera Street Primary School is recorded in your application.
How to apply for a WWVP Card
Complete the online application form. This is available from the website at the link below:
Chose Department of Education from the organisation drop-down box and also select Albuera Street Primary School from the location drop-down box. Please remember each time to volunteer at the school you need to bring your card each time.

RE: HOMESTAY HOSTS NEEDED FOR UTAS INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
The University of Tasmania's English Language Centre (ELC) with The Australian Homestay Network (AHN) seek support with distributing information to your school community via social media or newsletters, to ask families to consider short-term hosting of an international student in 2024.
Living with a local family, and all there is to learn from that cultural exchange, is a particularly important aspect of the international student experience. Host families and their children can benefit from this exchange also.
Why consider hosting?
- Build Lifelong Friendships: Hosting an international student can lead to the development of lasting friendships, enriching your life and broadening horizons.
- Cultural Exposure: Welcoming international students into your home provides younger learners in your family with the opportunity to experience diverse cultures, fostering a global perspective.
- Financial Support: Homestay payments offered by AHN will help ensure that the costs associated with hosting are covered.
Who are we expecting and when.
From 10 February 2024, we will welcome Study Tour students ( 18yrs+) from JAPAN. They will study English at the Sandy Bay campus for between 3 – 5 weeks, Monday to Friday.
Many students have a reasonable level of English; many may need help with navigating their way around Hobart, being made aware of the cultural differences, and learning about our lifestyle. For some visitors to Tasmania, it’s their first ever overseas experience and local support can significantly contribute to making their stay enjoyable and memorable.
To get involved, we ask members of your community to please contact (AHN) as soon as possible to register their interest. The Australian Homestay Network (AHN) will oversee and manage all aspects of the homestay program. To get started, please visit their website:
